Course on offshore geotechnical engineering

GEO carries out a 2-day course on offshore geotechnical engineering applicable to offshore structures and foundations. The course program includes elaborations on the: site and geophysical survey; soil investigation and laboratory testing; design methods of different offshore foundations including conventional and numerical methods. The course is being held for different international clients and is useful for young as well as experienced engineers and practitioners working in the oil and wind energy projects.

Jack-up entrance survey for Siemens Wind Power

In connection with the service of turbines at Lillgrund Offshore Wind Farm, GEO carried out a Site Clearance Survey for a jack-up platform installation. GEO conducted a sidescan sonar survey at two foundations in order to identify objects that could hinder the installation of the jack-up platform. GEO was contracted by Siemens Wind Power A/S.

Maersk Drilling projects

GEO is currently working on a number of projects for the geotechnical engineering assessment of jack-up drilling platforms in the North Sea, offshore Malaysia, Brunei, Egypt, Cameroon etc. The contractor is Maersk Drilling and the projects consist of engineering design for the installation and operation phases. The scope of work covers the evaluation of the soil data, application of the conventional and FE analyses for spudcan penetration and punch through risk assessments, as well as analyses for the environmental loads. 2D and 3D FE analyses are also applied for the design of the gravel banks, swiss cheesing, investigation of the skirted spudcan-footprint and spudcan-inclined seabed interaction etc.

CPT Campaigns

GEO has just completed a geophysical survey for the sea cable connecting the island of Anholt with the Anholt Offshore Wind Farm. In continuation hereof, Energinet.dk has asked us to carry out a Vibrocore and CPT campaign along the cable route and a CPT campaign along a cable route in the Little Belt.

Pile Driving Analysis in Beirut

Following the site investigations in connection with the extension of Beirut Harbour, GEO has been asked to carry out pile driving analysis on a number of piles. GEO is contracted by E. Pihl & Søn A/S.

A series of Maersk Drilling projects

GEO is busy working on projects for the installation of jack-up platforms in the North Sea, offshore Brunei, Dubai, Vietnam etc. The contractor is Maersk Drilling and the projects consist of jack-up geotechnical engineering assessments, including conventional and finite element analyses of spudcan – soil interaction, design of gravel banks, perforation drilling, sand excavation, gravel pads etc.

GEO is off to Kårehamn Offshore Wind Farm

In March GEO returns to Sweden to conduct the geotechnical site investigation for Kårehamn Offshore Wind Farm. The project includes high quality core drilling followed by laboratory testing and reporting. The 50 MW offshore planned wind farm is owned by E.ON and situated 4 kilometres East of Öland.

Norwegian research funding for GEO

GEO has received 1.2m norwegian kroner from The Research Council of Norway to a research project on “Water weakening of Chalk at realistic reservoir conditions”. The projects focuses on the Valhall and Ekofisk fields. The total amount of funds for the project is 15m NKK. Project manager is University of Stavanger, in cooperation with IRIS Research Institute, GEO and Cornell University. GEO’s part of the project comprises consulting concerning the planning and interpretation of laboratory tests.

GEO-ISC project for DONG Energy

GEO is to carry out advanced calculations in connection with the design of mudmad and pile foundations for the substation at the West of Duddon Sands Offshore Wind Farm (WODS) in Ireland. ISC Rådgivende Ingeniører A/S is responsible for the construction design. The collaboration between ISC and GEO has already resulted in foundation and construction design for the substations at Walney 1 and 2 Offshore Wind Farms. The substation at Walney 1 was installed successfully this summer.

Borings to 80 metres

In continuation of the Fehmarnbelt Large Scale Testing project, GEO has performed 2 borings to 80 metres on the Fehmarnsund-Brücke in Germany. An A-boring with core samples and a B-boring with down-the-hole CPT. The samples are now being tested at our laboratory. GEO was subcontracted by Per Aarsleff A/S.

Tests on frozen samples

GEO is to do laboratory tests on frozen core samples from Northern Greenland. The samples taken are from Greenland's frozen underground and therefore the laboratory tests must be carried out below - 10 degrees Celsius. Our client is MT Højgaard A/S.

400 MW offshore wind farm

DONG Energy has contracted GEO to perform the site investigations for the 400 MW offshore wind farm, Anholt, in Denmark. The offshore wind farm will be one of the world's largest, supplying 400.000 households with electricity.

Belgium here we come

GEO extends its services to offshore Belgium this summer, where site investigations and laboratory work are carried out for the ELDEPASCO offshore wind farm. The 216 MW planned wind farm is owned by the consortium Eldepasco N.V.

Consulting for Egyptian Drilling

GEO carries out engineering consulting for the possible installation of Egyptian Drilling new jack-up rig "Sneferu" at different Maersk Oil Qatar platform locations in the Al-Shaheen field, offshore Qatar.

Race Bank here we come

Centrica has contracted GEO to perform the site investigations for their offshore wind farm, Race Bank. GEO will initially carry out 50 deep borings, which may be expanded to include 160 deep CPT, as well as CPT and vibrocore for the cable route. Race Bank, located off the coast of Skegness, is planned as a 620 MW wind farm with 160 turbines.

Engineering consultancy for Walney 2

GEO cunducts engineering consultancy for ISC Consulting Engineers regarding foundation design of the transformer platform at the offshore wind park, Walney 2, located in the Irish Sea. The design is based on conventional and numerical modeling of soil-foundation interaction.

Consulting for Maersk Drilling

GEO carries out engineering consulting for the possible installation of a Maersk Drilling semisubmersible directly on the seabed, at different shallow water locations in the Caspian Sea. GEO consults regarding the stability of the vessel under environmental loads, applying conventional and numerical methods of analyses.

Fehmarn Belt Fixed Link advanced laboratory testing

GEO's laboratory is currently carrying out advanced geotechnical tests for the Fehmarnbelt Fixed Link project, see femern.com. The project includes an extensive test programme on Paleogene clay and Clay Till. The objective of the project is to provide high quality strength- and deformation parameters for designing the bridge or tunnel. The project will be finalized in the beginning of 2011. Part of the testing is carried out by our partners at Deltares and NGI. Read more about the project on www.femern.dk.

Krieger's Flak investigations completed

GEO has successfully completed phase 2 of the site investigations at Krieger's Flak 1 offshore wind farm. They included geotechnical boreholes and continuous cpt tests, carried out with our new cpt unit, GEOtop. The core samples are now being tested and analyzed at our laboratory and the final reports are being prepared for our client, EnBw.

Railway tunnel in Helsingborg

The Swedish town Helsingborg is establishing a whole new quarter which entails a new railway tunnel. GEO is performing geotechnical investigations for the cut and cover tunnel. These include drilling and geophysical borehole logging as well as laboratory testing. Our client is Helsingborg Municipality and the project is carried out in cooperation with Rambøll, Malmberg and Sweco.

Jack-up Platform Conference

GEO participates with both article and lecture presentation at the 12th International Conference - The jack-up platform in London this week.  The paper presentation is in cooperation with Maersk Drilling and the topic is "Spudcan Penetration FE Simulation of Punch-Through for Sand over Clay". Krieger's Flak 1 revisited

EnBw has contracted GEO to perform site investigations at the Krieger's Flak 1 offshore wind farm. GEO is to carry out borings at 30-40 turbine positions, as well as lab work and the final reports. The initial site investigations were performed by GEO in 2008. Krieger's Flak 1 is the German part of the transnational offshore wind farm project between Denmark, Sweden and Germany.

Race Bank Offshore Wind Farm

GEO continues its successful site investigations in Great Britain. From the Welsh Gwynt y Môr Offshore Wind Farm we continue to the projected Race Bank Offshore Wind Farm in Greater Wash, where we will conduct 60 deep CPT tests for Centrica.

Gwynt y Môr Offshore Wind Farm

This summer GEO is at the Gwynt y Môr Offshore Wind Farm conducting a site investigation for RWE npower renewables. The giant wind farm is located off the coast of North Wales and GEO carries out approximately 160 CPT's using our heavy seabed rig GEOscope.

Alternative foundation design for Walney 1

ISC Consulting Engineers has asked GEO to assist with alternative foundation design for the transformer platform at the offshore wind park, Walney 1, located in the Irish Sea. GEO carries out assessment of the design soil profiles and parameters and three-dimensional finite element analyses of the mudmat-soil interaction.

GEO is back at Rødsand II Wind Park

GEO is back at Rødsand II Wind Park, carrying out geotechnical investigations. CPT-tests at every turbine position shall verify that the excavated sea bed is fulfilling the design requirement before installing the foundations for the wind turbines. The client is the joint venture Aarsleff/Billfinger Berger JV for E.ON AB.

Performs geotechnical engineering for ISC Consulting Engineers

GEO assesses the soil conditions and assists with alternative modelling in the design of the foundations for two new ?star oil platforms? to be built in the North Sea, Danish Sector. ISC Consulting Engineers in Denmark carries out the design of the platforms for Noreco A/S and Bladt Industries / DONG Energy.

In-situ chemical oxidation for DONG Energy

This spring, GEO will carry out a large-scale remediation at a transformer station in Alleroed, Denmark, for DONG Energy. A pilot project has already shown how injecting the soil with a particular chemical substance can treat it from chlorinated compounds.

PCPTs for DONG Walney Ltd.

DONG Walney Ltd. has contracted GEO to conduct geotechnical work in terms of Seabed Deployed Deep Push Cone Penetration Testing (PCPT) and vibrocorings at turbine positions at the Walney Offshore Windfarm in the Irish Sea. Also, an additional laboratory classification and testing programme on samples from the vibrocorings has been carried out.

In connection with Maersk Drilling's new jack-up rig installation offshore Norway, GEO has carried out site geophysical survey, geotechnical investigation, as well as engineering assessment of the rig foundations at two preselected locations.

GEO drills for the Copenhagen Metro

GEO has commenced the third stage of investigations into the new Metro extension, called Cityringen, in Copenhagen this fall. 120 new boreholes will be drilled, as well as hydrogeological and geophysical surveys for the Copenhagen Metro.

Site investigations for Centrica

This fall GEO carries out site investigations at the offshore wind farm, LINCS, off the coast of Skegness. They include CPT samplings as well as deep boreholes drilled from a jack up platform. GEO also will perform laboratory tests and produce the final report to our client, the British energy company Centrica.
